In the last centuries BCE and throughout the early imperial era, the backbone of the army was the legions, which were infantry units of approximately 5000 men. These men were highly trained and well equipped. Each legion was divided into centuries commanded by a junior officer or centurion. Six centuries made up a cohort and ten cohorts made up a legion. Legionnaries fought mainly with short swords and throwing the javelin, and they were protected by rectangular shields and body armour. The real strength in a legion was its professionalism and its discipline which enabled it to carry out complex manoeuvres in the heat of battle. Legionaries were also responsible for building roads, forts, and bridges.
