CHAPTER 20

Millicent McHaffey straightened her skirt before entering the offices of Samisen/Delane. Having spent the last week going through the company books, she knew their financial status inside and out. She was not the type of person to avoid doing unpleasant things. However, when the news was this unpleasant she found herself seeking delays. How could someone have managed to bankrupt such a solid and well-run company as Samisen/Delane? It had to be the work of an insider. One with access to passwords and codes sufficient to corrupt the company’s most sensitive data.

When the elevator door opened, she stepped inside and pushed the button for the top floor. Fortunately, the change in their books had not, so far, cramped their style. When she reached the receptionist, she was told Mr. Samisen would be with her shortly. She nodded, sat down in the opulent waiting room, and thumbed through a magazine. So far, all her meetings had been with Mr. Delane. This would be her first time to discuss the company finances with Mr. Samisen.

“Mr. Samisen will see you now,” the receptionist told her.

She picked up her briefcase and went inside his office.

“Ms. McHaffey, come in. Such a pleasure to finally meet you.”

“Mr. Samisen.”

“Have a seat,” he said, indicating the chair in front of his massive desk.

The man was ruggedly handsome. If she hadn’t been intimidated before, she was now. “I’m sorry we’re not meeting under more pleasant circumstances.”

“I take it the news is not good.”

She opened her briefcase and took out the papers. “I’ll get straight to the point, Mr. Samisen. Someone has embezzled your money to the point of bankruptcy. I feel it is an inside job and that the person will attempt a company takeover.

Michael gave the woman his complete attention. If she was as bright as she was attractive, then things might not be so bad after all. He gave her his most charming smile.
