Millicent McHaffey glanced at her watch for the third time. She wasn’t used to being kept waiting. The young server refilled her water glass.
“Would you like to order now?”
“No, not yet,” she decided, cutting her eyes to the door. “My friend should be along shortly.”
“Very good,” he nodded, as he backed away. She followed his exit, wondering when he had time to work out.
The outdoor café was a pleasant change from the over-heated restaurants she was used to. She was admiring the geranium-filled flower-boxes lining the walk, when a footstep alerted her to someone’s approach.
“Sorry to be late. I have someone come in at the last minute, and I couldn’t get away.”
“No problem,” she assured him smiling.
“Have you ordered?” Michael asked, slipping into the chair.
“No, I waited for you.”
He seemed pleased. After they had ordered, he picked up the conversation. “So, you have something to tell me concerning the investigation?”
“Were you aware your office manager has a record?”
“Marge Hammond? You’ve got to be kidding?”
“Nothing very serious. Shoplifting. She was very young.”
“I had no idea.”
“ But that wasn’t the most serious information we uncovered. For some time now she has been enjoying a very close friendship with the Vice President of one of your competitors. It could be the source of your leak.”
"Does this Vice President have a name?"
"Michelle Dunbar. They've kept their friendship quiet."
Michael hesitated before asked his next question. "Are you tell me that the two are lovers?"
She didn't answer, but he knew that was what she meant. "Oh. Well, what she does in her private life is her own business. Unless that includes ruining my company. Do you have any proof?"
"No, not yet."
"Keep looking and keep me up to date. The losses are getting serious."
