The Forum of Trajan was built between 106-112 to commemorate Trajan's victories in two wars with the Dacians, Rome's rivals from the north. The Forum is actully a complex of grand spaces and structures, rather than a single building. The art works and other decorations displayed there, as well as the expensive materials used in building it, symbolized the power and wealth of the Roman Empire. It was certainly designed to impress visitors.
The Forum also showed the Emperor's concern for his people's daily needs. Romans lived mainly in small, cramped apartments, five or six stories high. So the Forum served as a large outdoor living space for the public: people could meet, gather, and conduct commerce and legal affairs. For example, the Basilica Ulpia was a public building used by business people and government officials as a law court and city hall.
The Forum was designed by Apollodorus of Damascus, a Greek architect and engineer from Syria. Made of brick and many different types of imported colored marble as well as gilt bronze and wood, it was a huge place, covering the area of about 9 football fields.
