Jack Samisen gave a hearty laugh. “Who in the hell are you? This sounds like a Rumpelstilskin story.”
“I told you who I was at the beginning.”
“I know what you told me. Now I want the truth.”
“You know the truth.”
“Okay. What don’t I know?”
“Are you scared of me?”
He stared at the attractive blonde. She looked sharp—moneyed. Was she one of his competitors? Had she engineered this entire setup? Why? And why was she so set on marrying Michael? On the other hand, if it would get him out of this scrape he was in… Hmmmm. And he could always worry about getting rid of her later.
“No. I’m not scared—just interested. May I ask you why you would demand such bizarre terms? You can’t think my son would ever care for you. Being forced to marry someone doesn’t exactly appeal to most men. You won’t get his money, if that’s what you’re after.”
“I’ve got a lot of that already. There’ll be no pre-nuptial agreement, by the way.”
Samisen sat forward, suddenly angry. “My son will never agree to this. He’d go to prison first.”
“Ask him. I think you’re wrong.”
“And I think you’re the most conniving bitch I’ve ever met. I should encourage Michael to marry you. You need to be taken down a peg, and he’s just the one to do it.”
A slow grin lifted her lips into a charming smile, but stopped just short of her eyes. “You think your son’s a match for me? Then, prove it. Advise him to accept the deal. Otherwise, he’ll lose the company and be spending the next few years in jail.”
“And what if that Cassandra woman is telling the truth? What if he did the things to her she said he did? Are you willing to put yourself in the same position? No one will be around to protect you in the privacy of your bedroom. I know what I’d do to you in his place.” He was pleased to see the flicker of fear in her eyes—the light shiver pass over her. So, she wasn’t quite as confident as she looked.
“You just make the deal,” she said. “Let me worry about the consequences.”
“Yes,” he agreed. “There most certainly will be consequences. You can’t cage a wild tiger without a getting few scratches. And living with one could prove fatal.”
“Are you threatening me?”
He laughed again. “I don’t need to threaten you—just remind you of whom you’re dealing with. And I promise you, my dear, you have no idea. No idea at all of what my son is capable. You may think you hold all the cards, but you don’t even understand the game.” He reached across the desk to his intercom. “Mrs. Danvers, get my son on the phone. Tell him I need to see him immediately. Also, cancel my appointments for the rest of the day.” He turned back to Niki. “Okay, I’ve started the ball rolling. Wouldn’t you like to make a call to the DA? Just to let him know that you may have some evidence to clear Michael.”
“I think it’s a little early for that. Don’t you?”
The truth was she needed a moment to collect her wits. Everything was happening so fast. True, she had planned this for a long time, but not like this. Who could have known the role Cassandra would play in her plans. And now that she was face to face with the real situation, she had doubts. What if what Samisen implied was true? Had Michael really hurt the Le Brock woman? Was she placing herself in danger? Maybe they would wait until she testified and then just have her killed. Why didn’t she think of that before? What kind of safeguard could she put into place?
“You’re turning a little green, Ms. Reynolds. Would you like a glass of water or a cup of coffee?”
She shot him a look of pure hatred—allowing the full force of her feelings to emerge for the first time. She had made a true enemy. He had ruined her father’s life and now he was wanting to ruin hers as well. “Coffee would be fine. White with sugar.”
He nodded and relayed the information to his secretary. In a minute she returned with two cups. “Your son is on line one,” she said, leaving the room.
Samisen picked up the receiver, and Niki cringed, knowing her life was about to change forever.
